Anti Spyware- The Day My Computer ALMOST DIED from Spyware Attack

HELP! My computer is running at a crawl and has been infected by a
virus!
How I dreaded that day I found my computer was running ever so slowly,
with its indicator lights flashing ominously, showing it was trying
hard..very hard, to access its hard disk, but never ever seeming to
stop.
I felt like I almost died!
Worse, I now *REALLY* hate myself for not installing that anti spyware
program that I knew all along that I should use...to protect myself
against the many unwanted spies, trojans, keyloggers, malware...and
viruses.
I thought my computer came along with in built software that was more
than sufficient to ward off all attacks.
But, boy, was I wrong!
Now even my browser could not get to whatever site I wanted. It just
returned a completely white blank sheet in place of the web site it
was supposed to search for.
Horrors!
It even displayed a nagging error message of:
"Your explorer.exe is trying to act as a server!"
"Yes or No to cancel"
Gosh!, that was MORE than what I needed.
I pressed "NO", and the computer acted like it hung up, making no
movement except for a deep, irritating humming sound from the hard
disk activity that never ever seemed to stop......
I rebooted the computer, press "YES"..and again, all that happened was
a sound of twirling and churning of the hard disk again, like a person
in utter turmoil after a bad fall through a sewage manhole!
"Maybe, the autoexec.bat file, or the config.sys file or the
system.ini file has been damaged or gotten corrupted, and needed to be
repaired", I thought. Time to reboot and go into the DOS operating
environment to troubleshoot.
Oh dear....! That's way too technical,...and wouldn't you agree with
me that all I ever needed was to INSTALL AN ANTI SPYWARE into my
computer in the first place?
An ounce of prevention is even better than the cure!
"No, better late than never", I thought.
I picked up the phone, made a telephone call to my friend to order
